The Nigerian Minister for Information, Lai Mohammed in a statement issued on behalf of the federal government just a couple of minutes ago stated the suspension of the micro blogging site is for now ‘indefinite’.

According to the statement, the suspension of the social media site is as a result of “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

The statement also revealed that the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately start the process of licensing all social media operations in the country.

It’s alleged that the suspension of the operations of Twitter in Nigeria is as a result of the site deleting a tweet made by the president, H. E. Muhammadu Buhari about the 1967 Nigerian civil war.

Recall President Buhari on Tuesday in an attempt to condemn the attacks on government facilities across the country quoted and referred those attackers to the experience of the civil war. He then threatened to treat those “bent on destroying” Nigeria “through insurrection” in “a language they understand”.

Lai Mohammed in his defense of the president tweet tagged the micro blogging site of ‘double standards’ and condemned the site for deleting the tweet.

As of the time of this article, Twitter was still operational in Nigeria and we do not know when the suspension of its operations in Nigeria will commerce.
